Vincent Paul Abbott, professionally known as Vinnie Paul, passed away peacefully on Thursday June 22nd, 2018, at the age of 54. He is survived by his mother, Carolyn, his brother and bandmate, Dimebag Darrell, and a host of lifelong friends and dedicated fans. Born in Abilene, Texas, Vinnie was one of metal's most influential drummers and an acclaimed figure in the heavy metal community. In 1982, Vinnie and his brother created the band PANTERA, which quickly gained popularity and cult status among heavy metal fans. Under his direction, the band achieved unprecedented success, selling more than nine million albums, receiving widespread recognition, and twice winning the coveted Metal Hammer Golden Gods award. Vinnie Paul remained an active presence in the music industry for over 35 years, performing in bands such as DAMAGEPLAN and HELLYEAH. He also participated in numerous side projects, and was an ardent supporter of the recovery of heavy metal subgenres such as thrash metal, death metal, and black metal. Vinnie Paul was beloved by many for his outgoing personality, sense of humor, and passionate commitment to rock music. His passion for drumming, fellow musicians, and fans will remain an inspiration for years to come.
