It is with great sadness that the world mourns the loss of Vivienne Westwood, a pioneering fashion designer, entrepreneur, and activist. Vivienne passed away on December 29, 2022 at the age of 81. Raised in the Derbyshire village of Tintwistle, Vivienne developed her passion for fashion through the influence of her parents’ employment in the textile industry. After studying silversmithing and jewelry at Harrow Art School, she opened a clothing boutique with her then-partner Malcolm McLaren in 1971. Emerging from the “punk rock” fashion movement of the 1970s, Vivienne’s signature style of subversive design balloons influenced the world of fashion. She remained an advocate for upcycled fabrics and the ideals of a more sustainable fashion sphere throughout her career, becoming a promoter for environmental protection. In 1992, Vivienne was awarded an Order of the British Empire for her services to fashion. She will be deeply missed by her son Joseph Corré, close family and friends, and all those inspired by her innovative designs and green advocacy. Vivienne Westwood was a true pioneer and will remain an icon of fashion and activism forever.
