Werner Klemperer (born March 22, 1920) passed away at his home on December 6, 2000, at the age of 80. Werner was born in Cologne, Germany, to the famed conductor Otto Klemperer and singer Johanna Geisler. He and his family moved to the United States in 1939 to escape the Nazi regime. Werner attended the University of California (Berkeley) and Columbia University, and served in the United States Army during World War II. Werner was an actor and director who performed on Broadway, in films and on television. He was best known for his starring role as Colonel Klink in the television sitcom, "Hogan's Heroes" (1965-1971). He also appeared in the films "The Portrait of a Lady" (1996), "The Boys from Brazil" (1978), "The Seven Year Itch" (1955) and "Cross of Iron" (1977). Werner was awarded a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 1968 and was posthumously awarded a star by the Television Academy of Arts & Sciences in 2000. He is survived by his sons, Mark and Matthew, and stepson Michael. He was predeceased by his wife, actress Peggy Converse, who passed away in 1994.
