Wilhelm Canaris, a German admiral, died in Flossenburg, Germany on 1945-04-09 at the age of 58 after a long and distinguished career in the military. Born on 1887-01-01, he served as Chief of the German Imperial Naval Intelligence in 1935 and was instrumental in developing the Abwehr, the Nazi Germany’s secret intelligence services. Canaris was highly decorated for his service to the country, being awarded the Iron Cross and Oak Leaves in World War I and the Cross of Merit of Prussia in 1935. During World War II, he was heavily involved in the resistance against Hitler, working with Nazi generals and helping to plan assassination attempts on the Fuhrer. His resistance activities, however, were discovered in 1944, and, as punishment, he was sent to Flossenburg concentration camp. He eventually died, five days before the camp was liberated, not in battle but of natural causes. Despite the circumstances surrounding his death, Canaris is remembered as a brave man, who endagaged in a covert campaign to sabotage and ultimately bring down the Nazi regime. He will forever serve as an inspiration to those fighting for the rights of the oppressed.

It matters not how a man dies, but how he lives. The act of dying is not of importance, it lasts so short a time. Samuel Johnson
