Woody Guthrie, renowned folk singer and activist, passed away on October 3, 1967 at the age of 55. He was born on July 14, 1912 in Okemah, Oklahoma to Nora Belle Sherman and Charles Edward Guthrie. The musical style and protest lyrics of Guthrie’s songs endeared him to generations of fans who admired his passion for social justice. His most widely-known works include “This Land is Your Land” and “So Long, It’s Been Good to Know Yuh”. Throughout his career, Guthrie wrote over 3,000 songs and published several books of lyrics. He also drew numerous political cartoons and wrote film scripts. Guthrie was active in the labor movement during the 1930s and 1940s, and joined the Spanish Civil War effort in 1937. His social activism continued into the 1950s and 1960s as he became involved in the civil rights movement. Guthrie died surrounded by family and friends who loved and respected him deeply. He will be remembered not only for his remarkable music, but for his commitment to justice and change.
