He attended Princeton University, where he was the co-founder of the American Whig-Cliosophic Society, before three years of study at Harvard Law School. He conducted civil and criminal trial law in Illinois before becoming a diplomat for the U.S. government. Throughout his career, Stevenson was well known as a prominent spoken political figure, with several famous quotes, including “If the Republicans will stop telling lies about the Democrats, we will stop telling the truth about them” and “My definition of a free society is a society where it is safe to be unpopular.” He is remembered for his work in international relations, his intelligence and wit, and his many years of public service. He will be dearly missed.
