It is with great sadness that the family of Alan Wilson Watts announces his passing on November 16, 1973. He was 58 years old. Alan Watts was a philosophical author and popularizer of Eastern religion who had an important influence on the counter-culture of the 1960s and the development of the New Age movement. He was born in England and attended King’s College London and Seabury-Western Theological Seminary in Illinois, eventually earning doctorates in Theology and Divinity. Watts wrote and lectured extensively on subjects ranging from Eastern religion to modern scientific topics. His popular books included The Way of Zen, which has become a classic in its field, and his lectures on topics such as psychedelics and sexuality remain influential in philosophy today. He is survived by two wives, Betty and Jano, three sons (Mark, Lila, and Anne), three grandsons, and two granddaughters. His legacy will remain as both an important author and thinker whose influence spread across a range of topics from the East to the West.
