Angelo Bruno, 69, of Philadelphia passed away on March 21, 1980. Angelo was a powerful figure in crime, leading the Philadelphia mafia for two decades. He was born in 1911, the son of Giovanni and Sylvia Bruno. He attended St. Paul's Catholic School, and later married his wife, Louise in 1932. He rose to fame and power in the Philadelphia crime scene after his predecessor, Philip Testa, was murdered in 1981. His career included a significant role in the Atlantic City casino industry as well as an extensive network of criminal contacts across the United States. He had a personal network of associates and informants that stretched across the city. Angelo was respected by his underworld counterparts and often seen as a model of restraint. He believed strongly in punishing violators of the mafia’s code of conduct, while often preferring to pay off victims of crimes rather than acting violently. Angelo was well-respected in the community. He was known to give out money to help the poor and underprivileged. He is survived by his wife Louise, two sons, Michael and John, four granddaughters, and three great-grandchildren. A memorial service will be held at St. Paul's Catholic Church on April 5th. Angelo’s life of crime left a lasting mark on the city of Philadelphia. He will be remembered for his contributions to the underworld and for his acts of kindness. He will be deeply missed by all those who knew him. May he rest in peace.
