Joseph Colombo, born on June 16, 1923, in New York City, passed away on May 22, 1978, at the age of 54. Colombo was a prominent figure in organized crime, known for his role as a capodecina in the Colombo crime family. He became the family's acting boss in the late 1960s and gained notoriety for his involvement in various illegal activities, including extortion and loan sharking. Colombo was also notable for his public persona; he often tried to distance the family from traditional organized crime stereotypes. He advocated for Italian Americans and founded the Italian-American Civil Rights League in the early 1970s, aiming to combat stereotypes and promote a positive image of Italian Americans. Colombo's reign was characterized by power struggles and attempts to establish legitimacy for the Mafia in the public eye, although these endeavors were often overshadowed by his criminal activities. Colombo’s life came to an end following an assassination attempt in 1971, which left him severely injured and incapacitated until his death in 1978. He is remembered as a controversial figure in the history of organized crime in the United States.
