Joseph "Crazy Joe" Gallo, an American mobster, died on April 7, 1972 at the age of 43, as a result of a gangland-style shooting in Little Italy, Manhattan. Gallo, a Brooklyn native, became involved with the Profaci crime family, where he gained notoriety in the underworld with his explosive temper and increasingly erratic behavior. By the late 1960s, he became increasingly suspect of the organized crime activities of the Profaci family, leading to his eventual break with the group and his return to his native Brooklyn. In early 1972, Gallo attended a family gathering at Umberto's Clam House in Little Italy. At approximately 4:30am, as Gallo and his bodyguard, Peter Diapolous, were leaving the restaurant, they were attacked by at least three gunmen, who fired several shots at the men. Gallo was fatally wounded while Diapolous escaped with an injury. Gallo was survived by his wife, four children, and his parents. His funeral was held on April 9, 1972. The three gunmen were captured but never revealed who had organized the killing.
Born January 26th, 1891 in Cassano allo Ionio.
