Today we gather to commemorate the life of Johnny Torrio; the late American mob boss who passed away on April 16th, 1957. Johnny Torrio was born in 1882, in Italy. He emigrated to the United States at the age of two and spent his early years in New York City. At age 18, he moved to Chicago and quickly began a career in organized crime. During his time in the Windy City, he rose to prominence as a leader of the city's infamous organized crime scene. Torrio was known for his shrewd mind and practical approach to organized crime. His guiding principles of "peace through mutual respect" proved to be hugely influential - leading to a more organized business model and higher profits for the mobsters who followed. He shifted the focus of organized crime away from violent street tactics towards more labor- and business-oriented strategies. His reputation for forging alliances between rival gangs, earning the nickname "the Fox of Chicago," also made him an invaluable figure in the underworld. Throughout his career, Johnny Torrio achieved considerable success within the world of organized crime, and left an indelible imprint on the culture of the city. We express our deepest condolences to those mourning his passing, and remember him for the legacy he left behind.
