Anthony Joseph Accardo, known as "The Big Tuna" and "Joe Batters", passed away on May 22, 1992 at the age of 86. He was a prominent organized crime figure in Chicago and a long-time ally of Al Capone. Accardo was born in the Little Italy region of Chicago in 1906. Early on in his criminal career, he was a Capone bodyguard and later alleged to have killed a gang leader for Capone during the St. Valentines Day Massacre. By the 1940s, he had become known as an "enforcer" for the Operation Family organized crime syndicate. Accardo made several investments during his time in organized crime, including a friend's restaurant, the Shangri-La. This gave him the nickname, "The Big Tuna," referring to the common name for the restaurant's specialty meal. He later ran gambling operations and casinos as well as investments in Caritas Internationalis, a charitable organization. Accardo's reign of organized crime slowed down in the 1970s and 1980s. At the end of his life, he had retired to the Chicago suburb of River Grove. He is survived by his wife, two sons and one daughter.
Try as much as possible to be wholly alive with all your might, and when you laugh, laugh like hell. And when you get angry, get good and angry. Try to be alive. You will be dead soon enough. William Saroyan
