John Gotti

American crime boss (1940–2002).

John Gotti, 61, died on June 10 2002, leaving behind a legacy full of controversy and notoriety. One of the most famous mobsters of the 20th century, Gotti rose to power and control of organized crime with the Gambino crime family. Gotti was born in the Bronx, New York in 1940. As a child, Gotti was arrested for petty crimes and joined gangs in the area. He worked his way up through the crime family ranks and was eventually named the ‘Caporegime’, or ‘Boss’, of the Gambino’s in 1985. Although he had criminal success, it came with a heavy price. Gotti continually faced legal battles and served multiple sentences throughout his life, including a life sentence in 1992. He died while serving at the United States Penitentiary in Springfield, Missouri. Gotti leaves behind a spouse, Victoria, and five children: John A. Gotti, Frank Gotti, Victoria Gotti, Peter Gotti and Angel Gotti. He will be remembered as one of the most powerful and notorious mobsters ever.
