Peter Gotti, Sr. (1940-2021), widely known former leader of the Gambino crime family, died on February 25, 2021 at the age of 81. Born on October 27, 1940 in the South Brooklyn neighborhood of New York City, Gotti rose to power after the 1989 death of predecessor Paul Castellano and became a prominent figure in organized crime operations in the city. Gotti was arrested multiple times in his lifetime, including in 1992 for racketeering charges related to extortion, narcotics distribution, and other violations of the Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations Act (RICO). Following a lengthy trial process, Peter Gotti was convicted in 2005 of conspiracy, extortion, and murder for hire and served nine years of life imprisonment. Gotti leaves behind a long legacy in the underworld, having become one of the most public figures in organized crime during his time in power. He was often referred to as "the Teflon Don" due to his ability to evade serious criminal charges and convictions in the past.
