Peter Gotti, Sr. (1940-2021), widely known former leader of the Gambino crime family, died on February 25, 2021 at the age of 81. Born on October 27, 1940 in the South Brooklyn neighborhood of New York City, Gotti rose to power after the 1989 death of predecessor Paul Castellano and became a prominent figure in organized crime operations in the city. Gotti was arrested multiple times in his lifetime, including in 1992 for racketeering charges related to extortion, narcotics distribution, and other violations of the Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations Act (RICO).
