On July 27, 1970, António de Oliveira Salazar, former Prime Minister and President of Portugal, passed away at the age of 81. Salazar was born to a rural family in 1889, in Santa Comba Dao. He studied law at the University of Coimbra and eventually gained a full professorship there. Salazar soon entered politics, becoming Minister of Finance in 1932 and subsequently Prime Minister in 1933. As Prime Minister, Salazar worked to restore Portugal's economy, pass welfare and labor reforms, and improve housing. His government also implemented a Corporative system of government. Although his authoritarian rule was seen by some as a liberator from a backward Portugal, in later years his regime was increasingly seen as undemocratic and tyrannical. Salazar suspended the National Assembly and press freedom, and placed restrictions on women's suffrage. In 1968, Salazar resigned due to failing health, and was replaced by Marcello Caetano. He remained President until his death two years later. His legacy remains debated and controversial.

That’s what literature is. It’s the people who went before us, tapping out messages from the past, from beyond the grave, trying to tell us about life and death! Listen to them! Connie Willis
