Salvador Allende, the long-time leader of Chile, passed away on September 11th, 1973 after a long political career. Allende was born on June 26th, 1908 in Valparaiso, Chile. Most famously, he served as President of Chile from 1970-1973. Allende was a supporter of leftist politics, achieving office after a narrow victory in the 1970 election, making him the first Marxist to become President of a Latin American country through a free election. During his presidential campaign, Allende had promised Chileans comprehensive social and economic reforms. Through nationalisation of major industries, free healthcare, free education, agrarian reform and workers' rights, Allende championed for a more just society in Chile. Salvador Allende was lauded around the world for his commitment to democracy and popular voice, although he met strong opposition from conservatives in Chile. He died while in office in a conflict between the Chilean Armed Forces and republicans. Allende left behind a legacy of democracy and social reform. His deeds and beliefs have been a source of inspiration for progressive movements in Chile and around the world. He will never be forgotten.
