We are saddened to report that Eusébio, a world-renowned Portuguese football icon, has passed away on Sunday, 5 January 2014 at the age of 71. He was born in Lourenço Marques (now Maputo), the capital of Mozambique, in 1942 and became famous in his country of birth during the 1960s. During his professional football career, he spent 15 years at Benfica – where he won 11 Primeira Liga titles, five Portuguese Cups and one European Cup. He was also named European Footballer of the Year in 1965. Eusébio was capped 64 times for Portugal and made his international debut as a 19-year-old. He played a major part in helping Portugal reach third place in the 1966 World Cup. He scored 41 goals in the tournament which remained a record until Miroslav Klose scored 16 goals in 2002. In 2004, Eusébio was honoured with a FIFA Order of Merit for his services and achievements in football. In 2000, Pelé named Eusébio one of the world's greatest living players in FIFA's 100th anniversary celebration. He will be remembered for his tremendous skills as a football player, and the legacy of his work in his beloved nation. He will be deeply missed.
