Ashok Kumar, legendary Indian actor, died on 2001-12-10 at the age of 90. He had conqured the hearts and minds of movie-lovers from India all around the world for over five decades. Kumar was born in Maler Kotla, Punjab, British India, and began his acting career in the 30s, at the age of 10. Over the course of his career, Kumar appeared in more than 300 films, most famously in Shankar's 1941 film Kismet. He gained critical acclaim for his performances in films such as Anand Math, Jhinder Bandi, Do Bigha Zamin, Chalti Ka Naam Gaadi and Jhumroo. Kumar was awarded the Padma Bhushan by the Indian government for his work in the field of Indian cinema. Kumar passed away peacefully on 2001-12-10, surrounded by loved ones. He will be deeply missed, but remembered fondly for his contributions to the film world, and to Indian culture as a whole.
