Audie Murphy, 1945 - 1971 Audie Murphy, the legendary World War II veteran and actor, passed away on 1971-05-28 at the age of 45. One of twelve children, Audie was born on 20 June, 1924 in Kingston, Texas. He grew up in poverty and enlisted in the US Army at the age of 16. Audie was a decorated war hero in World War II, receiving every US military combat award for bravery and valor, including the Medal of Honor. He was featured in the publication 'Stars and Stripes' for his heroics during the war. He went on to appear in feature films, playing the lead role in 44 pictures, including 'To Hell & Back' (1955), which was based on his autobiography. He gained worldwide celebrity, and was one of the most decorated US servicemen of World War II. Audie is survived by his wife Pamela, daughter Terry Lynn, and four brothers. He will be greatly missed.
