On Wednesday, December 15, 2021, esteemed author and scholar Gloria Jean Watkins, more commonly known as bell hooks, passed away peacefully at the age of 69. Known for her rigorous scholarship, prolific writing, and unwavering activism, bell hooks was an internationally known public intellectual and cultural critic. Born in Hopkinsville, Kentucky, in 1952, she earned both an M.A. and Ph.D. from the University of California at Santa Cruz and later taught at numerous college campuses, including Oberlin College and Yale University. she wrote more than 30 books, including their Eyes Were Watching God, Ain't I a Woman: Black Women and Feminism, and Feminist Theory from Margin to Center, in which she provided a unique perspective on race, gender, and culture and was awarded numerous accolades in her lifetime for her work in the fields of education and literature. Hooks' legacy lives on through her extensive body of literature, which has been credited with bringing feminist criticism into mainstream culture. She will be remembered for her passionate dedication to intersectional feminism and her formidable spirit, which was an inspiration to those who knew her and to countless others.
