Beverly Cleary, legendary children's author of books such as Ramona Quimby, Age 8, and Henry Huggins, died on March 25, 2021, at the age of 104. Over the course of her long and prolific career, Cleary wrote 34 beloved children's books that have been cherished by generations of readers. Born in McMinnville, Oregon, in 1916, Cleary grew up in rural Yamhill, a small farming town 23 miles away from Portland. She was moved by the lack of interesting children’s books and was determined to change that, which she did beginning in 1950 after she wrote her first two books, Henry Huggins and Fritz, the Cat. These two books launched her career as one of the most beloved authors of children's literature. Cleary's books introduced the world to memorable characters like Ramona Quimby, Beezus and Henry Huggins, and their stories have captured the hearts and imaginations of children and adults alike. She won numerous awards for her works, including the National Medal of Arts, the Newbery Medal, and the Laura Ingalls Wilder Award. Cleary was deeply celebrated and respected by her readers and peers, not only for her moving and engaging stories, but for her generous spirit, making her an inspiration for authors everywhere. Cleary is survived by her son, Malcolm, and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be private.
