He had been an officer in the Indian Army since 1978 and had previously held many positions, including Vice Chief of Army Staff, General Officer Commanding-in-Chief of the Southern and Central Commands. Bipin Rawat was a notable recipient of several awards, including Param Vishisht Seva Medal, Ati Vishisht Seva Medal, Sena Medal, Vishisht Seva Medal, and Uttam Yudh Seva Medal.
