Award-winning entrepreneur Ellsworth "Bumpy" Johnson passed away on July 7, 1968, at the age of 62. Born in Charleston, South Carolina in 1906, Johnson moved to New York City in the 1920s. There, he began a career in organized crime within Harlem's underworld that spanned nearly 40 years. He gained notoriety in the city as an influential gangster and eventually developed a unique rapport with other criminals and police officers. Johnson used his notoriety to become a legitimate businessman by forming several enterprises in New York City and eventually in Harlem. Although Johnson faced numerous arrests throughout his life, he continued to enjoy success in his business endeavors. His thriving enterprises included nightclubs, restaurants, and transportation services. Johnson was a major part of the unique culture of Harlem that was flourishing during his lifetime. In the later years of his life, Johnson was known for his philanthropic efforts. He was committed to giving back to the community of Harlem and was credited with creating a sharpshooter program at a local school and partnering with a church to hold holiday food donations. Johnson's legacy lives on in the streets of Harlem and in the memories of his friends and loved ones. He will be remembered for his ambition, innovative character, and his dedication to his community.
