On December 9, 1968, Enoch L. Johnson passed away peacefully at 85 years of age. Enoch was born in 1883 and worked as a businessman and politician throughout his life. Enoch "Nucky" Johnson was notably the political boss of Atlantic City during Prohibition, a reign that lasted from 1911 to 1941. During this time, he was able to preside over the popular beach town and expand its waterfront casinos, coastal hotels, and boardwalk. Enoch was one of the most powerful figures in 1930s Atlantic City, and founded the Union National Bank in 1921 which remained until 2012. He also helped organize networks of booze smugglers and political cronies during Prohibition throughout New Jersey and Philadelphia. He is survived by his wife, Mabel, and his two children, Nucky Jr. and Josie. He will be remembered for his sharp business savvy and tireless dedication to the Atlantic City community.
