Legendary radio DJ, Casey Kasem, passed away on June 15, 2014, at the age of 82. Kasem was born Kemal Amen Kasem on April 27, 1932, in Detroit, Michigan to Abdl and his wife, Hajar. He grew up in Michigan before moving out to California with his family while still in his teens. Kasem began his radio career at the age of 18, spinning Top 40 records in Miami, Florida. Soon after, Kasem launched into an illustrious career of over 50 years in broadcasting. He was the host of his own iconic radio show "American Top 40," which is said to have bridged musical generations with its storytelling format and his easy way with listeners. Kasem went on to win many awards throughout his career, some of which include the Radio & Records' Lifetime Achievement Award, induction into the National Association of Broadcasters' Hall of Fame, and the Radio Hall of Fame in 1988, in addition to being a featured speaker at many speaking engagements. In addition to his legendary career in broadcasting, Kasem also became known for his voiceover work, especially lending his voice to cartoons such as Scooby Doo, Transformers and The New Adventures of Jonny Quest. Casey Kasem was a beloved figure who made a lasting impact on the radio world. He leaves behind many mourners, and an incredible legacy that will never be forgotten.
