Charles I of Austria, born November 17, 1887 and formerly known as Franz Ferdinand Karl Ludwig Joseph Maria, passed away on April 1, 1922 at 34 years of age. He was the last crowned Emperor of Austria, King of Hungary and Croatia, King of Bohemia and Archduke of Austria. He reigned until 1918 and was crowned King of Jerusalem in 1916. Charles I was well known for his strong commitment to preserving the Austrian monarchy and its movements in the course of World War I. He initiated reforms to modernize the government and economy of the Habsburg Empire and attempted to resolve its erratic external policies. Despite his attempts at improving the nation, his reign was filled with conflict as a result of the war and the emergence of several national movements of liberation. After his abdication in 1918, he lived in a variety of European countries until returning to his native Austria. Charles I died peacefully in Funchal, Madeira, Portugal in April 1, 1922. He is survived by his loving wife, Princess Zita of Bourbon-Parma, and their children. He will be remembered with admiration and respect for his courage, dedication, and commitment to service. May he rest in peace.
