Christopher Tolkien passed away on January 16, 2020, at the age of 95. He was an esteemed academic, author, and literary editor whose works remained respected and renowned in the literary world. Christopher was born in Leeds, England, in 1924 and lived there until 1928, when his family moved to Oxford. He graduated from Exeter College, Oxford University, in 1945, and helped to edit his father’s works until his father’s death in 1973. Christopher Tolkien was best known for his work on The Silmarillion, published in 1977, as well as several other Tolkien-related works throughout his lifetime. He was recognized for his devotion to preserving the legacy of his father’s work, and for promoting the study of Tolkien's works. Additionally, Christopher wrote biographical works about his father and was one of the leading institutions behind the publication of Tolkien’s poetry. He was credited with having an immense influence in the community, and will be remembered for his dedication to preserving his father’s legacy.
