Estelle Getty, beloved actress and comedian, passed away at the age of 84 on July 22, 2008. Born Estelle Scher on July 25, 1923 in New York City, Estelle began her career in show business in the middle of the 20th century. Her unique comedic timing, charisma, and unique stage presence quickly earned her parts in several Broadway plays. Estelle received acclaim for her performance as Sophie Strasberg in the Tony-winning Torch Song Trilogy. She made her television debut in the 1982 TV-movie Studs Lonigan and went on to appear as a regular on The Golden Girls, earning universal acclaim and four Emmy Award nominations. Estelle’s other acting credits include Tootsie, Mask, Stop! Or My Mom Will Shoot, and several other television programs. Her memorable roles in these productions have made her an indelible part of popular culture and will always be remembered. Survived by her three children, Estelle is mourned by many. May she rest in peace.
