Evelyn Nesbit, one of America’s most alluring and famous vaudeville performers of the late 19th and early 20th centuries, passed away on January 17, 1967, at the age of 82. Born on December 25, 1884, in Pennsylvania, Nesbit began her performing career in 1899, touring with two companies and taking part in numerous musicals throughout the United States. In 1901, she was hired to model for the much-acclaimed artist, Charles Dana Gibson, launching her to fame as the iconic Gibson Girl. From 1906-1908, she played ingénues in a number of Broadway plays. In addition to her work in the performing arts, Nesbit wrote three autobiographies and was involved in filmmaking during the late 1920s. In her lifetime, Nesbit inspired a generation of vaudeville performers and was a pop culture figure for her successful career in both the performing arts and art modeling.
