F. Scott Fitzgerald, American author and a leading figure of the "Lost Generation," passed away at the age of 44. He was born in 1896 in St. Paul, Minnesota, but moved to New York City as a young man, where he published his first novel, This Side of Paradise, in 1920. This novel propelled him to literary fame. That same year he married Zelda Sayre, with whom he had one daughter, Frances "Scottie" Fitzgerald. Fitzgerald went on to write several other novels, including The Beautiful and Damned, The Great Gatsby, and Tender is the Night, as well as short stories published in such magazines as The Saturday Evening Post. He captured the decadence of both the Jazz Age and Great Depression eras in his works. Fitzgerald was also a prolific correspondent, creating an immense body of letters, postcards, and notes. He died on December 21st, 1940. Fitzgerald continues to be widely considered one of the greatest 20th-century American writers. His novels are still read around the world and have been adapted for film and television multiple times.
