Legendary comedian, actor, and writer Flip Wilson passed away on November 26, 1998, at the age of 64. Born in 1933, Wilson was an iconic figure in entertainment during the 1970s, and was famed for his zany characters and review skits on The Flip Wilson Show. The Grammy-winning performer gained widespread popularity for his comedic innuendos and catchphrases, such as “What you see is what you get!” He paved the way for African American comedians to be taken seriously in the entertainment industry and was the first African American host of his own variety show. In recognition of his contributions to television and entertainment, Wilson was inducted into the TV Academy Hall of Fame in 2000. Wilson’s legacy will endure as a mainstay in television history and entertainment. He will be greatly missed by fans and friends across the world.
