It is with profound sadness that the family of Francys Arsentiev announce her passing on Monday, May 24, 1998 at the age of 40. Francys was born in Nalchik, Russia. She was an accomplished mountaineer and was the first American woman to summit Mount Everest without additional oxygen or help from a Sherpa guide. Francys was known for her great love and appreciation of the outdoors and was an advocate for environmental protection. She also volunteers in teaching and demonstrating skills to local climbers and was a member of the International Women's Mountaineering Association. Francy is predeceased by her husband Vladi and is survived by her daughter Alice, parents, siblings and many friends. She will be deeply missed and fondly remembered by all who had the pleasure of knowing her.
