George V, King of the United Kingdom and the British Dominions, Emperor of India, died at the Royal Lodge in Windsor, United Kingdom on January 20, 1936, at the age of 70. During his Reign, he oversaw the establishment of the 1919 Irish Free State which enabled the long history of Irish autonomy. He also successfully transitioned the Monarchy into Constitutional limits, allowing for gradual democratic reform to come over Britain and its Dominions. George V was an enthusiastic promoter of the Royal Navy, introducing the highly popular Royal Air Force and creating a unified and respected British Commonwealth. He joined active service in the Navy at the onset of World War I and was the first British Monarch to visit the United States, in 1907. Born on June 3, 1865, George was the second son of the long-serving and greatly beloved Edward VII and Queen Alexandra. George married Princess Mary of Teck in 1893 and had six children, including the future Edward VIII, George VI, and Mary, Princess Royal. He was an Ashes-winning cricketer and was particularly fond of horse racing, breeding, and hunting, which ultimately led to his death from lung cancer in 1936. He is remembered as a beloved leader, King, and husband.
