George Washington Vanderbilt, son of William Henry and Maria Louisa Vanderbilt, passed away at the age of 51 on March 6, 1914. Born 1863 in New York City, he was the youngest member of the Vanderbilt family, gaining a notable inheritance from his father's railroad and shipping companies. Vanderbilt made use of his inheritance by developing and operating many businesses, including real estate and coal mining companies. He is most remembered for the large home he had built in the Blue Ridge Mountains of North Carolina, known as the Biltmore Estate, which became the first private house in America to be made into a museum. He was a generous philanthropist, donating to support local schools and libraries. He will be remembered for his hard work, his well-rounded business sense and for leaving a lasting architectural legacy.
