Georgy Konstantinovich Zhukov, a highly celebrated Soviet leader who was responsible for major victories in World War II, passed away on June 18th, 1974 at the age of 77. Born into a peasant family in 1896, his service in the military started in World War I. He bravely fought for the Red Army and in 1939 rose higher and higher in military ranks. In 1940 he was promoted to General, and by 1941 he was leading the defense of Leningrad. He took part in the Battle of Stalingrad and orchestrated the Battle of Kursk which crippled the Nazis. He then led the Soviet forces throughout their triumph over Nazi Germany in 1945. Georgy Zhukov was lauded for his brilliance in understanding both the grand strategies of war and the casual details of military combat. His talent and success led to various awards and medals. After World War II, Zhukov was appointed Chief of the General Staff and Marshal of the Soviet Union. He also assisted in establishing a new military doctrine, setting the basis for his country's defense development for the years to come. Georgy Zhukov's contribution as the supreme commander leading troops to victory was befittingly honored. He will be remembered in history for his immense impact and his inspired leadership.
