Geraldine Page, esteemed Academy Award-winning actress of stage and screen, passed away on June 13, 1987 at the age of 62. Page was a native of Kirksville, Missouri and educated at the Goodman Theatre School in Chicago. After studying acting for five years, she began appearing on regional theatre stages, including Broadway and off-Broadway. She rose to fame after appearing in her Broadway debut, Summer and Smoke in 1948. Page’s esteemed career spanned three decades. She earned her first Oscar nomination for her role in Hondo (1953), and later won an Oscar for Best Actress in a Leading Role in The Trip to Bountiful (1985). She also earned seven Tony Award nominations throughout her career. During her lifetime, Page was the recipient of many accolades, including a Life Achievement Award from the American Film Institute, the prestigious Kennedy Center Honors, and a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. Page is survived by her husband, the actor Rip Torn, whom she married in 1963. She also leaves behind two adopted children.
