We mourn the passing of Groucho Marx, the beloved actor, comedian, and writer, who died in his sleep on August 19, 1977 at the age of 86. Groucho Marx was born Julius Henry Marx in Manhattan, New York on October 2, 1890. He was a comedian, actor, singer, film producer, screenwriter, and master of ceremonies. He achieved fame as a member of the Marx Brothers, one of the most successful comedy acts in history. He grew up in the heart of the “Borscht Belt” of Yiddish American culture in New York City. His career as an entertainer began in vaudeville and burlesque. He, along with his brothers, moved to Hollywood in 1930 and starred in a series of successful films. He was a master of wit and wordplay. His signature style, which included cigar-smoking, leering eyebrows, and the ever-present greasepaint mustache set him apart from other comedians of the era. He was the author of the memoir, ‘Groucho and Me’ and several other books. He also wrote for “Your Show of Shows” and hosted the television game show “You Bet Your Life.” Among numerous awards and honors bestowed upon Groucho Marx, he was presented with an Honorary Academy Award in 1974, in recognition of his lifetime achievement. He was predeceased by his brothers Chico and Harpo, his wife, and daughters Miriam and Melinda. He will be remembered as a comedic genius whose brilliant wit, originality, and lasting legacy will remain with us forever.
