Author Harper Lee, best known for her 1960 novel "To Kill a Mockingbird," has passed away at the age of 89. Born Nelle Harper Lee in Monroeville, Alabama on April 28, 1926, Harper was the youngest of four siblings. She attended Huntingdon College in Montevallo and the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa before working for a year at the Empire Bank Building in Monroeville. Delayed by illness during her studies, she eventually used stories from her childhood to complete her Pulitzer Prize-winning "To Kill a Mockingbird", which was published in 1960 and quickly became both a critical and commercial success. In 1961 she was awarded the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction, and in 1962 To Kill a Mockingbird was adapted into an Academy Award-winning film. Lee's skill for storytelling has led to her becoming an inspiration to other authors, and she is widely respected for the work she has achieved. Harper Lee was preceded in death by her parents, and she is survived by her siblings.
