James Francis Cagney Jr., famed American actor, passed away on March 30, 1986 at 86 years old. Born on July 17, 1899 in New York City, Cagney had a storied and illustrious career as a Hollywood actor. He made his film debut in 1930 and starred in 84 more films throughout his career, gaining particular acclaim for his roles in Yankee Doodle Dandy (1942) and White Heat (1949) for which he earned two Academy Award nominations. Cagney was distinguished for his portrayal of gangsters and tough guys, but he also had considerable range, performing in musicals, comedies, and dramas alike. He worked with some of Hollywood’s most successful directors, including Alfred Hitchcock, and is particularly remembered for his collaborations with acclaimed director Raoul Walsh. Cagney was a recipient of the Kennedy Center Honors in 1980, was made a Commander of the Légion d’Honneur for outstanding contributions to French cinema in 1979, and received an Honorary Academy Award in 1971 in recognition of his lifetime of work. Cagney is survived by his wife of 55 years, Frances, and three grandchildren. He will be remembered for his immense contributions to the film industry and his lasting influence on Hollywood.
