James Mason, 75, died on July 27th, 1984. He was a beloved actor, producer and director of British cinema, as well as an avid collector of modern art. Born in Yorkshire, England in 1909, Mason earned his first role in A Star Fell From Heaven (1934). He quickly gained recognition in theFILMindustry for his lead role in Gregor (1936). Over the course of the next several decades, Mason accumulated a vast portfolio of accolades and performances as a prominent figure in Hollywood. He starred in films such as The Night Has Eyes (1942), Random Harvest (1942), The Seventh Cross (1944), A Star is Born (1954), Lolita (1962), and North by Northwest (1959). In his years with the big screen, James Mason won Academy Award nominations for The Seventh Cross (1944), and A Star Is Born (1954). He was awarded a Golden Globe for his part in A Touch of Larceny (1959). In addition to his role in the media, he was also a moviemaker in his own right and produced the film Georgy Girl, which earned an Academy Award nomination in 1967. Mason remained active in cinema until his retirement in 1970. After his retirement, he continued to write film reviews. James Mason will be remembered for the tremendous impact he had on the film industry, both in front of the camera and behind the scenes.
