Jim Nabors, the beloved actor and singer, has died at the age of 87. He was born in Sylacauga, Alabama, on June 12, 1930, and was best known for his role as Gomer Pyle on The Andy Griffith Show, and as the host of The Jim Nabors Hour, a variety show that aired in the late 1960s and early 1970s. Mr. Nabors entered show business in the early 1960s as a singer, performing in clubs and recorded numerous easy-listening albums that received widespread acclaim. He was discovered by Andy Griffith in 1963 and became a regular on The Andy Griffith Show as Gomer Pyle from 1964 to 1968. He appeared in a total of 152 episodes of the show. In 1967 while still appearing in the Andy Griffith Show, Nabors starred in his own series, Gomer Pyle U.S.M.C. His friendly, jovial personality made him a beloved character, and his catchphrase, “surprise, surprise, surprise,” entered the American pop culture lexicon. Mr. Nabors was celebrated for his contributions to both TV and music and had a successful career for decades after his breakthrough role. He was also an accomplished business man and investor. In 1975, he opened a macadamia nut farm in Hawaii that grew to become the largest in the United States. For many years, Mr. Nabors made his home in Hawaii and remained active in film and television. He was inducted into the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 1991. He was also a passionate philanthropist and gave generously to numerous charities. Jim Nabors will be remembered fondly by friends and family for his generosity, kindness, and infectious humor. He will be deeply missed.
