William Joyce, esteemed writer, broadcaster, and activist, passed away on January 3, 1946, at the age of 39. A committed socialist, Joyce was born in Brooklyn, New York, and raised in Galway, Ireland. After attending University College, Dublin, Joyce returned to Britain and found employment at the National Provincial Bank of England. He soon gave up his steady occupation to commit himself to full-time activism and writing. Joyce wrote a number of books, including Fairyland of Science, The Complete Nonsense Book, and The Biography of an Atom; through these works, he aimed to make science more accessible and interesting to children. He also wrote a number of influential books on the topics of socialism and military strategy. Joyce’s most famous work, The Lord Haw Haw Show, contributed to the euphemism of the same name. Through this program, he broadcasted as a propagandist for Germany during World War II. The importance of this work has been both widely praised and sharply criticized. William Joyce was a prolific writer, broadcaster, and activist who, despite his controversial views, significantly invested his life into his causes up until his passing. He will be remembered for his thoughtful work and unwavering beliefs.
