John Carradine, an American actor who gained fame for his collaborations with movie director John Ford, died on November 27, 1988, at the age of 82. Born in 1906 to medical doctor and artist William Carney and his wife, actress Ardanelle Abigail, Carradine's acting career began in 1927 with an uncredited cameo in the film The Delightful Rogue. Over the next 61 years, he went on to appear in over one hundred movies and countless television guest appearances. Throughout his life, Carradine was perhaps best known for his roles in The Grapes of Wrath, Stagecoach, and The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance and other classic films. He was twice nominated for the Saturn Award for Best Supporting Actor for his work as the character Egg Shen in the 1986 film Big Trouble in Little China. In addition to his acting career, Carradine was a published poet, writer, and author. He was a published author for over fifty books throughout his life. In his last years, Carradine suffered from a debilitating case of pneumonia, which ultimately led to his death. He is survived by his five children, Mara, Dave, Robert, Bruce, and Christopher—all of whom are actors—and four grandchildren.
