John Forbes Nash, Jr. (1928-2015), a mathematician and Nobel laureate, passed away on May 23rd, 2015 at the age of 86. Nash was an influential figure in the field of mathematics, particularly in game theory and differential geometry. He achieved international fame when he was awarded the Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Sciences in 1994 for his pioneering work in game theory. Born on June 13th, 1928 in Bluefield, West Virginia, Nash attended school in Roanoke and graduated from the Carnegie Institute of Technology (now known as Carnegie Mellon University) in 1948. He went on to do his doctorate at Princeton, where he primarily investigated Partial Differential Equations and Algebraic Geometry, although his pioneering work in game theory began as an independent study. Nash’s later years were marred by schizophrenia, yet through the help of a respected physicist and a professor of psychiatry, Nash was able to be productive despite the symptoms of his illness. He achieved a remarkable comeback in 1994, when he was awarded the Nobel Prize for his work. Since the Nobel award, Nash has gained worldwide respect and admiration for his strength and the courage he displayed during his illness. He was the subject of the 2001 film A Beautiful Mind, which detailed Nash's battle with schizophrenia and his eventual award of the Nobel Prize.
