John Paul Getty III (1956-2011) passed away on February 5th, 2011 at the age of 54. John was born in Los Angeles, California in 1956 to parents John Paul Getty Jr. and Abigail Harris. He had a successful career in the arts, as well as the music and film industry, and is famously known for being the grandson of late oil tycoon, John Paul Getty. His first marriage, in 1979, to Giselaspeciala Martine Zacher, produced a daughter, and his second marriage, to the philanthropist and philosopher, Victoria Holdsworth, produced two children, a daughter and a son. John received a great deal of attention in 1973 when he was kidnapped by the 'Ndrangheta, an organized crime group, in Rome and held for ransom. Despite overcoming this major event in his life, in 1977, John suffered a major stroke in New York City, leaving him paralyzed and speech impaired for the rest of his life. John will be remembered for being an advocate for education, culture, arts, and music; for his philanthropic activities; and for his bravery and faith when facing numerous difficult challenges throughout his life.
