On May 1, 1945, Joseph Goebbels passed away at the age of 47. He was an influential figure in the political sphere of Germany during World War II, serving as Reich Minister of Propaganda from 1933 to 1945. Goebbels joined the Nazi Party in 1923 and was first appointed as Deputy Propaganda Leader in 1926. After supporting Adolf Hitler in the 1932 presidential election, he was appointed Minister of Propaganda for the Nazi Party in 1933. As Propaganda Minister, he was one of the key figures in Nazi Germany's leadership, overseeing the promotion of Nazi ideals, the issuing of war news, and the development of the Nazi media empire. Goebbels also strongly supported Hitler's decision to rearm Germany and denounced the Treaty of Versailles, which placed restrictions on Germany's access to weapons. As the war progressed, Goebbels continued to be an influential force in Nazi Germany. He oversaw the development of films to promote Nazi ideology and even wrote several Nazi films, including The Triumph of the Will. Goebbels also declared total war following the launch of Operation Barbarossa and declared the "total mobilization" of all sectors of the German nation. Goebbels' life ended in May 1945 shortly after Hitler's suicide. After hearing of Hitler's death, Goebbels and his wife committed suicide together in the garden of the Reichschancellery in Berlin. His death marked the end of a long political career full of controversial and influential decisions. He will be remembered for his role in propagating Nazi ideology throughout Germany and the world.
