Adolf Hitler, German politician, autocrat, and leader of the Nazi Party, died on April 30, 1945, at the age of 56. Born in Austria in 1889, Hitler rose to power in Germany in 1933, as the nation's Chancellor. Through a series of powerful rhetoric and aggressive foreign policy, he led the nation through a period of national revival known as the Third Reich. Under Hitler's leadership, the German economy was restored and military expansion was pursued. Hitler's regime put in place numerous extreme policies and practices, from which resulted the extermination of millions of people, primarily Jewish people, across Europe and Russia. Hitler's rule significantly impacted both the lives of citizens in Germany and those of the nations in which his armies occupied. Hitler's reign ended in 1945, when he, along with his wife, Eva Braun, committed suicide in their Berlin bunker. His death resulted in the end of Nazi Germany and the Second World War. Though Hitler attempted to bring a legacy of accomplishment, his actions ultimately marked him as one of the most prominent and controversial figures of the 20th century.
