Katherine Helmond, an American actress and director, died on February 23, 2019 at the age of 89. Helmond was best known for her role as Jessica Tate on the comedy series Soap, Mona of Who’s the Boss?, and Lois Whelan on the hit sitcom Everybody Loves Raymond. She also starred in the movies Time Bandits, A Night in Heaven, and Brazil. Helmond began her career as a stage actress, appearing in numerous Broadway productions, and later went on to appear in several television and film roles. She received seven Emmy nominations for her roles on Soap, Who’s the Boss? and Everybody Loves Raymond. In 2014, she was honored with a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences. Helmond was born in Galveston, Texas. She is survived by her son, two grandchildren, and her nephew.
