Khushwant Singh (September 2, 1915 – March 20, 2014) died peacefully on Thursday, March 20, 2014, in New Delhi, India, at the age of 98. Singh was an eminent Indian writer and journalist and was the author of several books and short stories, including The Company of Women, Delhi: A Novel, The History of Sikhs, and The End of India. He also wrote for several prominent Indian newspapers, including the All-India Radio and The Indian Express. In his long career, Singh won numerous awards, including the Padma Bhushan, India's third-highest civilian honour. He was a member of the Indian Parliament from 1980 to 1986, and was awarded the Padma Vibhushan in 2014, Indian's second-highest civilian honour. Singh was an outspoken, blunt, and oftentimes controversial figure. His wit and humor earned him a huge following in India and abroad. He is survived by his wife, two sons, and a large extended family. His legacy will live on through his books, stories, and his role in Indian public life. He will be remembered for his contagious zest for life and unwavering commitment to the communities he served. May he rest in peace.
