On May 6th, 1919, L. Frank Baum passed away at the age of 62. He was born in Chittenango, New York on May 15th, 1856, the seventh of nine children of Cynthia and Benjamin Baum. A renowned author, Frank Baum initially studied at Peeksill Military Academy before beginning work as an actor and theater manager. After he married Maud Gage in 1882, he continued his writing career, eventually publishing more than 60 books. His most famous work, The Wonderful Wizard of Oz and its thirteen sequels, gained immense popularity and inspired a 1939 film of the same name. He was also the owner of a few newspapers and a manufacturer of entertainment and novelties. He was a recognized leader within the Theosophical Society and played a significant role in launching the International League of Moral Education. Throughout his life, he was an avid supporter of women’s right to vote and an advocate for the rights of Native Americans. L. Frank Baum will be remembered and mourned by a generation of readers who found solace in his artistry, creativity and efforts to make the world a better place.
